New Pilot Program: Magen David Adom and the Ministry of Health Join Forces to Address Mental Health Emergencies and Suicide Prevention

Magen David Adom (MDA), Israel’s national emergency organization, is launching a new pilot in collaboration with the Ministry of Health to improve responses to mental health crises and suicide prevention. This initiative is based on the understanding that mental health emergencies, like physical ones, require immediate and professional intervention to prevent harm to individuals and their surroundings.

Starting in the Tel Aviv District, calls to MDAs 101 emergency call center related to mental health or suicide prevention will undergo a detailed assessment by trained responders. Depending on urgency, cases will be classified as “red” (high-priority) or “yellow/green” (lower priority). Immediate interventions will be handled by a crisis team, including a specially trained paramedic and a mental health professional, supported by a telemedicine psychiatrist.

This pilot integrates emergency mental health care with the expertise of MDA, creating a comprehensive response model. The ultimate goal is to ensure rapid, effective care in critical moments, minimizing potential harm to patients and their communities.

Eli Bin, MDA Director-General, emphasized, “This pilot marks a significant step forward in Israels emergency healthcare system, ensuring both physical and mental health are prioritized. We look forward to expanding this essential program nationwide.”

Together, we aim to offer hope, care, and support to those in need of treatment for both physical and mental illness or injury.

Happy 2025 to our supporters and friends 🙌🏼

Whilst our office is still on break until January 13th we wanted to share some fantastic events coming up in our community

Aryeh Myers will be joining us from Israel in February. Aryeh has more than 20 years of frontline EMS experience. After working as a paramedic in London for 10 years, he moved to Israel in 2012 and joined Magen David Adom. He served a decade as a senior paramedic and trainer for MDA before
moving to its International Relations Department in 2022.

On October 7, Aryeh was on call in Ashkelon treating a range of injuries, such as
shrapnel wounds and smoke inhalation resulting from rocket attacks. “I have seen, heard, and experienced things that I wish never ever to repeat,
including being so close to a rocket explosion that I heard the shrapnel hit the shelter that I’d made it into, with less than five seconds to spare,” he said.

Aryeh will be speaking at 3 community events - make sure you book in to hear him!

Bookings are required for the centralshule and stkildashule events (links included in flyers)

Shabbat Shalom 🙏🏻

In a scene out of a Bible story, MDA teams helped deliver a new baby in the Jerusalem Forest. Last week, Hallel and Natan Stein, an expectant couple, headed to the hospital after Hallel’s water broke. To help induce labor, they parked their car near Ora Junction and decided to hike along a trail to the hospital.

The walk proved effective, and sooner than expected, Hallel began feeling intense contractions in the middle of the trail. Natan immediately called MDA’s emergency 101 call center, where EMT Noam Benita guided Natan on how to assist, and dispatched a mobile intensive care unit team.

However, due to the trails distance from the road, the ambulance couldn’t reach the couple. So, Noam continued to offer guidance on the phone while the MDA team, led by senior paramedic Moshe Benita, ran nearly a kilometer down the forest trail carrying medical gear, arriving seconds after the beautiful new baby made its appearance,

“The team was amazing,” said Hallel and Natan. “We’re so grateful everything went well, and we’re leaving with full hearts and a baby in our arms.”

“I’ll never forget this birth, delivering in nature with family guidance was truly extraordinary,” said paramedic Moshe Benita.

We continue to pray for the safe return of our hostages, the IDF and the people of Israel 🇮🇱🎗️🕎🙌🏼✡️
